OVERVIEW OF TAIAO
Rotorua is abundant in natural features, from lakes and streams, to the forest, parks and reserves. The Tatau Pounamu Taiao (Environmental) Strategy covers the areas between the Puarenga awa and the Waiohewa awa, including Mokoia Island. We aim to protect and enhance our local natural features with a coordinated, collaborative and sustainable approach as kaitiaki (guardians) of the environment.
Tatau Pounamu is committed to becoming predator free by 2050! We have been able to build some awesome momentum in this space.

ECO WARRIORS
(Note: We are currently working towards reactivating this)
Eco warriors is a space for young people to come together and take care of our natural environment!
We have kaupapa on every fortnight for our local youth to excercise their kaitiakitanga in a safe, fun and nurturing environment!

COMMUNITY MAARA KAI
Tatau Pounamu engage with community around what their vision is for their community garden space, Source funding to resource community garden aspirations and support community garden events driven by the community.
BECOME AN EASTSIDE KAITIAKI (VOLUNTEER)
(Note: We are currently working towards reactivating this)
Papatuānuku is in need of a kaitiaki just like you! We are looking for whānau, rangatahi and businesses keen to volunteer or support our work on the Eastside.
WAIKAWAU (HANNAHAS BAY)
We have traps in this area that are taken care of by local Kaitiaki (Volunteers). If you would like to learn how to set traps and maybe even have a line for you and your Whanau to take care of please get in touch with our Pou Ao. The traps set here at Waikawau can help keep predators away from Mokoia Island.
MOKOIA ISLAND
We also have traps set here and require Kaitiaki (Volunteers.) Trap checking days on the Island are Wednesday’s and Saturday’s.

We want traps in every home across the Eastside. If you live between Ngapuna and Tikitere, contact our Pou Ao to join our Tatau Pounamu Trap Library.
Once you’ve signed up and collected your trap, we cn help you upload your trap on to our Predator-free app.

RIPARIAN PLANTING
Riparian Planting is great for preventing erosion near waterways as well as improving these waterways and soil. This type of planting also strengthens banks, making habitats healthy for local indigenous wildlife.
Riparian Planting celebrates, recognizes and promotes local community involvement in planting.
